The best way to stand out is by being yourself. Don’t waste time trying to copy someone else. We all have different personalities, experiences, thoughts, and ideas that are unique specifically to us; so why try to be anything or anyone else? Don’t spend your time thinking about someone elses blog design, their tone in videos, the topic of their blog post, or the content they share. Sure it’s great to have other things and people influence you, but at the end of the day there is only one YOU, make the most of it!
People will like you and appreciate you for who you are, not for who you pretend to be…

I’m not talking about essays or writing style, I’m talking about substance, what is your blog/company substance? What makes you, YOU? The number of blogs out there increases every day and that number is only going to increase. You can pretty much find a blog about any topic you want. It almost feels like we’re all stars floating around in a giant never-ending blog galaxy. Sure we share the same space but we are all made up of different elements and different experiences; we all have a different composition. It is these different elements and experiences that we should focus on and let shine.
My composition:
- background in SEO working with fortune 1000 clients such as adobe, conde nast, salesforce, sandisk
- CMO/founder of a startup in the social media space
- social media consultant
- technical SEO consultant and the guy running Hirank.com
- people and idea lover
- traveler and explorer of all things and places that are foreign to me
- have experience in doing everything from cleaning movie theaters to running a company
- entrepreneur and chess player
- and a whole lot more
So how does this affect what I write/talk about? Well I try to write about various ideas, strategies, tactics, and tools to inform and educate people about social media (and SEO, there is always a fair share of learning in there for me as well). I try to use my experiences and ideas to shape and craft content that makes me unique, stuff that I think helps me shine and get discovered by people like you. I’m the guy that’s always telling people that in order to succeed in the social media space it’s not just about understanding tools, you have to be clever and you have to be creative. I’m the guy asking you, “what’s your composition?”
By the way, I was just watching the history channel and they had a great program talking about the moon and the universe, can you tell where I got blog topic from?

Remember that wonderful post that Wired Magazine wrote, about how we should all quit blogging? Well, one of the issues that was not addressed was context. If everyone is out there is talking about the same thing and you decide to join in, there’s no way that people are going to notice you right? I [...]
