Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Get an Iphone

July 11th, 2008

apple iphone 3gFor those of you who haven’t heard yet, buying an iphone right now is about as useless as carrying around a notepad in your pocket.  Why?  Because Apple is having trouble activating the phones.  Apparently something is going on wit the itunes servers that is keeping people from downloading software and activating their phones.  What’s worse is that Apple employees are just telling everyone to take their phone home to activate it.  Well the trouble with this is that people still can’t activate their phones from home either!

Can you imagine waiting in line overnight to get an iphone only to find out that the phone can’t be activated?  Personally, I would loose it.  Now this doesn’t mean that none of the iphones can’t be activated.  Actually many of them are working, but MANY of them are not.  Here is an excellt post on Gizmodo that chronicles the many complaints people are having with their new iphones.  The story made the #1 spot and techmeme as well.

The issue here is what Apple is going to do to now that they have pissed off their loyal Apple users.  Are they just going to take it on the chin and say “sorry” or are they going to offer some sort of discount or coupon to everyone who has purchased an iphone today.  My bet is they are just going to say “sorry.”  But who knows, after all when the old version iphone price dropped, Apple did over a price difference refund to anyone who purchased the phone within a few days of the price drop.

It’s a shame that Apple wasn’t apple to have a clean launch and even bigger shame that they are pinning the activation malfunciton on the itune servers.  They should have known that millions of iphones activating the server at the same time would cause problems.  I knew there was a reason I decided to wait to get my iphone, and I would recommend that most people wait a few months as well.

Are You Going to Get the New Iphone?

July 9th, 2008

new apple iphone 3g

In case you forgot, this Friday, Apple is officially debuting it’s new vacuum cleaner…I mean iphone.  I haven’t owned an iphone yet, but I’ll be honest with you guys, I’m seriously considering the new one.  Currently I’m stuck with the first model Samsung Blackjack, not too thrilled.  Apple has really rocked the world with it’s continuous revolutionary products and the iphone is definitely one of them.  So why do I want to buy the new iphone (and perhaps, why should you?)

Price

The new iphone is going to cost only $199, remember how much he original iphone cost?  around $400.  Of course, the $199 base version is really all I need, but for those of you out there who want the higher end model (more storage) you can spring for the $299.

Speed

When the first iphone came out the users complained of slow speeds and demanded a faster connection, Apple listened and the new iphone is going to be outfitted with 3G technology, which means faster downloads and faster internet access.  By the way, rumor has it that the next version of the iphone is going to have something called “lite” or “light” technology, it’s supposed to be even faster then 3G.

3rd Party Apps and Features

I’m actually very excited about this.  The fact the Apple has opened up it’s device to allow the creation of 3rd party applications is great.  This means that you are sure to find an application out there that will be able to satisfy all of your needs, if not, you can always design and create your own :)   The phone is also going be equipped with a GPS that is far more accurate than the one the first iphone had.  I also love the sleek look and feel of the phone itself, the design is just great.

It appears that the new iphone may have higher monthly costs associated with it but of course you have to check with your carrier to get all that info.  I’ve been wanting the iphone since the first version came out, and now thanks the price cut, I just may get one.  I would recommend waiting a few months though for all the reviews and feedback to come out, wait to see how people respond to it and if you get a chance, try to play around with one in the store or steal a friend’s.

For a much more in depth review of the iphone visit the Wall Street Journal Iphone Review

So my question to all of you is, “are you going to get the new iphone?  why or why not?
