How Do You Keep Your Personality Within the Company?
Let’s say you form a company with a few of your friends. You guys are easy going but get your work done. You’re not formal, in fact your almost the exact opposite of corporate. You guys love to have fun and people can tell you enjoy what you do. Your personalities make you guys hip, cool, and cutting edge. People love your company and they love the people behind it. Now let’s say your company begins to grow from 3 people to 15 people then to 25 people, 45, 75, etc. How do you scale your personality within the company?
All of these questions have to do with your “corporate” culture, your marketing, and your hiring process. If you want to keep your personality in the company then you have to make sure your persoanlity goes into your marketing. If you are not trying to go the corporate route then don’t make your marketing sound corporate. You also have to make sure you are hiring the right people, you have to make sure those people are trained properly, and you have to make sure that your corporate culture supports the “personality” of the company. Take Digg for example, they do a great job of scaling their personality. Anyone who has met Kevin Rose (Digg founder) or members of the exectutive team, can see that the personality of the company has not been altered. From their town hall meetings to their fun parties, to their open public interactions, Digg has made their personality known. They are the new cool way to share information. The folks that work at Digg are smart fun people who love what they do. Making sure your team members love what they do is one of the most important factors in making sure the personality can scale within the company.
The team members are the best marketing tool that a company possesses, and it all starts with the first few employees of the company. If your personality is reflected in your marketing then you will attract people that love your personality.
