Linkedin Launches Applications, Are You Using Them?

Posted: October 29, 2008 • Filed under: Friday's Food for the Soul, Leadership, Marketing Strategy, Tech news, Tools and Reviews, Uncategorized

If you haven’t already started marketing yourself on linkedin, you should!  Linkedin has just announced that they are going to be adding applications to their platform.  What does this mean for you?  Well it means that you now have an extra set of tools that you can use to market yourself.  The new applications let you do things like update folks on your travel schedule (and see who is going to be near you and when), insert your blog url so that your connections can become readers, show your presentations, etc.

Here are the list of applications that linkedin is currently supporting:

Reading List by Amazon

“Extend your professional profile by sharing the books you’re reading with other LinkedIn members. Find out what you should be reading by following updates from your connections, people in your field, or other LinkedIn members of professional interest to you.”

Box.net Files

“Add the Box.net Files application to manage all your important files online. Box.net lets you share content on your profile, and collaborate with friends and colleagues.”

Company Buzz

“Ever wonder what people are saying about your company? Company Buzz shows you the twitter activity associated with your company. View tweets, trends and top key words. Customize your topics and share with your coworkers.”

Google Presentation

“Present yourself and your work. Upload a .PPT or use Google’s online application to embed a presentation on your profile.”

Huddle Workspaces

“Huddle gives you private, secure online workspaces packed with simple yet powerful project, collaboration and sharing tools for working with your connections.”

WordPress

“Connect your virtual lives with the WordPress LinkedIn Application. With the WordPress App, you can sync your WordPress blog posts with your LinkedIn profile, keeping everyone you know in the know.”

Blog Link

“With Blog Link, you can get the most of your LinkedIn relationships by connecting your blog to your LinkedIn profile. Blog Link helps you, and your professional network, stay connected.”

SlideShare Presentations

“SlideShare is the best way to share presentations on LinkedIn! You can upload & display your own presentations, check out presentations from your colleagues, and find experts within your network.”

My Travel

“See where your LinkedIn network is traveling and when you will be in the same city as your colleagues. Share your upcoming trips, current location, and travel stats with your network.”

I’m sure this list is going to expand rapidly but for now, this is what they have.  Once the applications are added you can see them in your profile like so:

I highly recommend that those of you who don’t have a linedin account get one, and those of you that do have a linked in account should install the applications and read over my linkedin marketing tips.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the linkedin applications.  What sort of apps would you like to see linkedin include in upcoming releases and why?

Releasing a Tech Party Video During the Recession, Bad Idea or Who Cares?

Posted: October 11, 2008 • Filed under: Tech news

According to a post by techcrunch around 20 or so tech “elites” decided to scamper off to Cyprus to have a little party, of course what tech party is complete without the making of an online video…

These folks posted a video of themselves drinking and having fun while the rest of the world is entering a recession.  This begs the questions of “should we be upset about this?” or “should we even care?”

Here’s a snippet from techcrunch describing the party and those who were at it:

“A group of twenty or so tech elite were partying 1999-style in Cyprusthis last week, and posted a lip sync video of the Journey song “Don’t Stop Believing” a couple of days ago. Among the group were Brittany Bohnet of Google, Mike Hudack of Blip.tv, Dave Morin and Aaron Sittig of Facebook, Sam Lessin of Drop.io and Jessica Vascellaro, the Wall Street Journal’s Silicon Valley beat reporter.”

Of course it can be argued that there is nothing wrong with the video, after all it’s just a bunch of guys having fun on vacation in Cyprus, so what’s the big deal?

Well I think the issue here is not that they were having fun, the issue is that making the video public is a bit of a spit in the face of the struggling startups and tech companies that are barely surviving.  They could have just as easily made the video private to share with friends and family.  I can understand why several people are upset about the video but at the same time I can also understand why a lot of people out there are just saying “who the hell cares?”

So what’s your take on the video?  Do you think it was a bad idea or do you not care?

12 Year Old Finds Iphone Flaw…12 Year Old With an Iphone?!

Posted: October 9, 2008 • Filed under: Tech news

Today Cnet reported that a 12 year old boy found an iphone flaw while texting his girlfriend.  A lot of people were interested to read about the flaw and how to fix it, but read the first sentence again…”a 12 year old boy found an iphone flaw while texting his girlfriend.”  Did you have a cell phone or a girlfriend when you were 12 years old?

Sure it’s great that the kid found a flaw in the new phone but I think what really matters here is that the younger age groups are really starting to make a push for technology.  It almost feels like kids are maturing faster into becoming little adults.  100 years from now we’re going to have 12 year old software engineers and developers running the fortune 100 companies out there.  I mean, a 12 year old with an iphone…really? (let alone a girlfriend).

What’s even more interesting is that nobody is really talking about the fact that the person who found this flaw happened to be 12 years old!  Are we beginning to see technology and gadgets become even more main stream?  As one of my twitter followers pointed out earlier today, when he was 12 years old phones were made of candy…now 12 year olds are running around with iphones… what ever happened to going outside to play?

You tell me, what do you think about this?  Does it matter/should we care?
