A Lesson in Social Media from the Beatles

Guest post info: Drew Gneiser works for Axiom Marketing Communications in Minneapolis, MN and writes on their company’s social media blog at DailyAxioms.com.  He enjoys discovering new music as well as exploring new ideas within social media.

In July 1969, the Beatles began recording the last song they would ever collectively record together, aptly titled “The End.” This Abbey Road song ends on what is one of their most famous lyrics – “And, in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

Interestingly, this is the only Beatles song that showcases musical solos from all four members of the band.  The Beatles understood that they must each give their individual talents to make the band work.  Social media depends on the livelihood of giving and receiving.  Link sharing and retweeting are often praised as supreme in social media, but in my opinion, these really only scratch the surface.  It is not enough to casually get involved, but you must develop a true desire to benefit and help others.  Find ways in which your talents can help solve other’s needs.

True community is built by deeper giving.  Instead of just replying “Great post!” on someone’s blog, think about how you can advance the conversation.  You may know things that could invigorate the conversation or add a new layer of information.  Establishing meaningful and lasting relationships requires this type of giving.

Many people online have a selfish mindset when approaching social networking.  I frequently run across people who are trying to get ahead at whatever cost.  They follow thousands of people on Twitter and Tweet their web address every few minutes to get more traffic.  They connect with hundreds on LinkedIn and Facebook to impress people with their numbers.  A lot of people can see through this type of behavior, and in the long run, it won’t pay off. Numbers mean little if there is not real substance to back it.  Instead of focusing on how you can become known, focus on how you can help others, and if you continue to work hard at it, the love will come back around.

“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.” What are you doing to truly give to your community? How can you increase the value you are adding to conversations, blog posts, Tweets, etc?  Are you so focused on numbers, traffic, stats that you are loosing sight of actually helping people?

As Jacob regularly says, thanks for reading.

Hello from China!

Ni Hao (hello) from Shanghai!

So it turns out that my site is banned from China, I’m assuming because I use the word “social” throughout my content :)    This means that I can’t upload any pics here, however, I have been posting a lot of pics on Facebook.  Just click the link to my profile on the left hand side of this site and browse through my albums, however you have to add me as a friend to see them.  So far we (me and my travel buddy Brian) have only visited Beijing and Shanghai but have been having a blast.  We rode our bikes through the Hutong Alleyways in Beijing, saw the forbidden city and the Lama temple, and explored all over Shanghai (and of course much more, see the Facebook pics).  The smog here is absolutely horrible!

Beijing was an amazing place with lots to see and do.  The city is massive and takes a bit of getting used to.  Getting around is quite hard when you don’t understand the language so it’s important to walk around with a phrase book and do a lot of pointing to words that mean things like “train.”  Our buddy
Daniel has been living in Beijing so he has been taking us around to see the sites and some amazing restaurants.  Once we left Daniel in Beijing things became complicated but we’re still alive and able to get around, so that’s a good thing!  We will be returning to Beijing for a few days at the end of our trip and one of the things we’re looking forward to the most is going out to eat with Daniel (so we can get some good food!).

Shanghai is absolutely massive, the buildings here just make you stare into the sky with your jaw dropped.  As far as site seeing goes in Shanghai
there isn’t as much to see as say Beijing.  There are scammers everywhere trying to get us to visit “art exhibitions” or “have tea” with them, so you definitely have to be a bit careful.  I’ve also been propositioned to “meet pretty girls” by several people not to mention buy cds, dvds, shoes, bags, watches, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

Tonight we head out to visit Huangshan to climb the Yellow Mountain, supposedly one of the top 10 sites in China.  I will have a lot more pics going up on facebook soon and when I get back to San Francisco I will share more stories.

In the meantime I will be putting up a few guest posts (with the help of my brother Josh in LA) and who knows, perhaps a post or two of my own.

Zaijian (goodbye!)

How do You Define Community?

March 15th, 2009

I was watching Fox News the other day, I don’t remember what show it was but the commentator was talking about community.  He said that a community revolved around his neighbors and people that resided within a certain proximity to his physical location.  According to Wikipedia: “Traditionally a ‘community’ has been defined as a group [...]

Facebook Wants to be Your Therapist

If you recall facebook used to allow you to update your status by saying, “jacob is…”  Once the new facebook homepage design came about facebook decided to ask all of the users a question which is “what’s on your mind?” Now I’m not really speaking from experience here but it seems to me like this [...]

I’ve trying to find a simple way to sync up my google calendar with my iphone for quite some time.  A few weeks ago I discovered Nuevasync.  Per their website: “NuevaSync allows direct, over-the-air, native synchronization of certain smart phones and PDA devices with public PIM, and calendaring services including Google Calendar.  NuevaSync does not [...]
